Can a Yeast Infection Be Prevented?

So can yeast infections be prevented? Yes! How you say? Simple, just follow these three guidelines. First, take care of your intestines by eating a healthy diet (veggies, grains, proteins). Second, do not take these medications/OTC’s: antacids, anti-ulcer medications, birth control pills, and steroids and/or cortisones. And third, reduce the intake of alcohol, white flour products, foods with yeast or fungus in them (aka: mushrooms), and avoid eating or drinking a lot of food or drink that is acidic (like orange juice or tomato sauce or vinegar).

But what if you have to take one or more of these medications listed? What if you can only afford to eat pasta? What if you can’t live without your beer? What if you have to have your favorite salad dressing made with a ton of vinegar? Ok, ok. It’s not the end of the world if you ingest these things, but if you do, you need to be very diligent about your intestinal health. This means you need to take a really good probiotic, which is a way to keep a lot of healthy “good bacteria/flora” in your intestines to keep the yeast in check. A probiotic is usually a pill that contains a few or a lot of strains of the healthy flora/good bacteria that are in your intestines already. And as an added bonus, this will keep your immune system functioning at a high level, which will increase your health in all areas, so it’s something that just about everyone should be doing anyway. Doctors are even looking into probiotics for children, and there is a study being conducted that shows a 25% decrease in allergies in children who regularly take probiotics. So don’t be surprised if you keep hearing more and more about probiotics for people of all ages.

Ok, so you should take probiotics. What else can you do? Get your rest and reduce stress. Both of these allow your body to fight anything that it needs to and to repair damage already done. When you get more sleep, this allows your immune system to function optimally. Your immune system is most active while you are asleep, so to all you people who think you can skimp on sleep and get more done – get over it! You need your rest so you can function optimally during the day. You will be healthier, think more clearly and be able to get more done than without sleep.

And how do you reduce stress? “Get over it” should be something you tell yourself several times a day. If you find yourself focusing on something negative, tell yourself to “get over it” and move on with your day. Living should be about doing, not dwelling. Focus on what really matters in your life, and the rest will fall into place. If you’re not sure about what is really important to you, get the book “The Passion Test” and you will figure it out. Choose in favor of what really matters to you, and your life will suddenly be a lot less stressful. You will have some really difficult decisions at the start, but once you start to make those choices in favor of what’s important the rest of the choices you have to make will be a piece of cake!
