Where Does a Candida Yeast Infection Come From?

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “Vaginal yeast infections are very common. About 75 percent of women have a yeast infection during their lives. And almost half of women have two or more yeast infections.” The numbers for yeast infections are climbing every year. But, women are not the only ones getting yeast infections. The incidents of male yeast infections are growing as well.

So, why has there been an increase in recent years? What causes a yeast infection? These questions will be answered in this article. So let’s get started.

A yeast infection is an overgrowth of yeast or fungus, which is called Candida Albicans and is already present in the human body. It plays an important role in the digestive balance of your intestines. Your small and large intestines have a balance of Candida Albicans yeast and “probiotics flora/good bacteria”, which when in optimal balance allow you to perfectly digest your food and help to create an optimal immune system. Your immune system gets 70% of its function from your intestines, so you can see an optimal balance of Candida Albicans yeast and the probiotics flora is vital to your overall health.

So now that we have got the basics out of the way, you are probably wondering how yeast gets from your intestines to other places in your body. Well, the yeast is also present in small amounts in other parts of the human body, for example in a woman’s vagina. Yeast is also present in a fair amount of the food we eat. Almost every single type of bread we eat has yeast in it. Mushrooms have yeast/fungus. And most products containing white flour have yeast in them. If you sit back and reflect on your diet, you are probably like most people in the U.S. and eating a fair amount of white bread, pasta, etc. Now don’t get me wrong, it’s not a bad thing to eat white flour products, it just makes it easy for the yeast to get out of control if one or two things happen.

If your diet consists of a lot of white flour products and you take antibiotics, you are inviting disaster. This is one of the ways Candida can take over your body almost instantly. When you take antibiotics, it kills off most of the bacteria in your body, including the good bacteria/probiotics flora in your intestines, vagina, mouth and other places in your body. This automatically tips the scales in favor of Candida overgrowth because the “good bacteria” help to keep it in check. When you think about the typical U.S. diet and how often we have been prescribed antibiotics, it is no wonder why so many people get yeast infections. There are also some other medications and OTC (over the counter) items that can help to tip the balance and cause a yeast overgrowth: antacids, anti-ulcer medications, birth control pills, and steroids and/or cortisones. If you are taking any of these regularly and are experiencing a yeast infection, that is most likely the reason why. And just like antibiotics, with the increase in women taking birth control that may also have a strong correlation with the increase in vaginal yeast infections.

There are also many other ways that a Candida overgrowth can occur. If you regularly consume alcohol of any sort, that can tip the scales in the wrong direction. If you are stressed out (and who isn’t nowadays), that will tip the scales in favor of a yeast infection. If you have anything that is affecting your intestinal health, such as a parasite or worm, that will tip the scales. By now you get the picture, it all starts with your intestines and how healthy they are.
